Collage Life Lesson’s Wednesday – Week 1

Posted on Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

What is Collage Life Lesson’s Wednesday and what is the motivation behind it?  I’ll start with my motivation.   Recently I was thinking of people whose art I admire and that have a work ethic I really respect.  I love that Donna Downey, does Inspirational Wednesday and shares her brilliance with so many people.  Randel Plowman does A Collage a Day which he launched in March 2006 and Tracy Vergedo  challenges herself to blog for 30 days and writes blog posts like 30 Days of Gratitude.  Jane Spakowsky, aka Gritty Jane, does a series of paintings in 20 minutes when she wants to spark creativity.  This week I was lucky enough to get one of her beautiful original angels from that series.

The qualities these artists have in common are focus, consistency and determination.  Since I truly believe we all learn and grow by modeling people and behaviors we admire I’ve decided to embark on committing to getting my butt in the studio and make art with the intention of sharing lessons learned.  I ponder a lot while I create as I imagine we all do.  My background in psychology spills over into my art and inevitably when I work a light bulb goes off and I learn a poignant life lesson.  And so Collage Life Lesson’s Wednesday is born.   Here are the pieces from my first paint session…thanks for visiting.

I started with re-purposed boards…work that was messed up in production.  Instead of pitching the boards I decided to reuse them.  Here are pictures of work in process….

And here are the finished pieces

Thanks for visiting…Do you have any lessons that have come to you in the process of making art that you want to share? Oh, please do!!

Love those pieces! And I look forward to more of your ponderings on the creative process. One thing that keeps coming up for me lately is that so many people get blocked by fear: what if it doesn’t turn out, what if I make a mistake, etc. I’ve realized that I have experienced a big boost in my self-confidence with regard to my ability to FIX mistakes. I’m doing commissioned memory quilts and mistakes with others’ treasures could be disastrous but I’ve come to TRUST myself and my abilities to just move forward knowing that I can always do something to “fix” what hasn’t really come out the way I’d planned. I work by improvisation anyway and a “fix” is just another step in the creative process. I know my medium, I know lots of techniques, so trusting myself and the process is key!

I just wrote this blog post for the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center… SHAMc…but wanted to share it with you, too….

Yes…this blog is about SHAMc but i must take a minute to speak about Kiaralina and Todd…I’ve lived a lot of places in my life…and many places in community…and know a LOT of brilliant, enlightened, organized and creative people.  It’s not often I’m totally awestruck….meeting Kiaralinda and Todd and the community they have created and the vision they have has completely blown my mind. I will try to put into words why…First, they appear tireless.  Todd and Kiaralinda flow seamlessly from one task to another..graciously…with joy.  They have created a home that is a riot of color and yes, whimzey.  They can be in the middle of a class or musical event at Whimzey and visitors will wander up to behold the spectacular visual feast they call home.  The visitors are welcomed. They meet no strangers. I think that’s what makes Todd and Kiaralinda so special…although they have enormous vision they are not wed to a “plan” that will realized their dreams.  They hold the vision and life draws to them the people and circumstances that manifests their dreams. It’s wonderful to meet the many people who have been so devoted to birthing SHAMc .  The door is open for everyone to be a part of the art and music center.  A group of people show up at Whimzy on Tuesday nights and work on the mosaic panels that will cover the SHAMc building.  It’s a great way to meet people…to be creative and to be a part of the birth of a center that will have a long and joyous life…just like Todd and Kiaralinda!!!!

Lynn Whipple Workshop at Whimsy House

Posted on Saturday, January 19th, 2013

I’ve wanted to meet Lynn Whipple for so many years.  Lynn was one of the first mixed media artists that caught my attention.  Her work was popular long before the current mixed media craze.  Well my dream came true last weekend.  Lynn taught a two day workshop at Whimzey House…the over the top amazing house of Kiaralinda and Todd located in Safety Harbor, Florida.  We had a blissful evening meet and greet to kick off our magical weekend..also met Lynn’s wonderful husband John…John is a fantastic artist as well.  Todd and John were available to offer direction or cut a custom size piece of wood if we needed it.  Saturday evening we went on a sunset cruise aboard Kiaralinda and Todd’s floating living room.  It was so fun to meet so many creative, fun people and gracious people.  The one problem was the workshop just wasn’t long enough…none of us wanted to leave!!!  The icing on the cake….Lynn and I are going to co-teach a four day beach workshop in 2013…stay tuned!!!

Our first night
